Last September, the Congregational Church of Pinehurst, UCC
invited all the churches of the Southern Conference to join in
a new global mission project-- the building of our very own
elementary school in the West African nation of Mali.
Through the recent decison to pool our donations with
The Peace Corps, our school will be built in the village of Tongo
in the province of Segou in Mali by BuildOn in conjunction with
the We Are Family Foundation and will open in the Fall of 2010.
BuildOn and the Foundation have built 16 schools in Mali,
Malawi and Nicaragua since 2003. These nations are among
those with the highest illiteracy rates in the world.
Prior to the decision to pool our donations with The Peace Corps, the estimated cost for building the school was $45,000. Our total contribution will now be only $14,000. Nearly $9,000 has been raised, leaving another $5,000 needed to complete our participation in the project. All funds need to be collected by October 15. If you or you church would like to particpate in the project, contact Tim Maroney at 910-887-9691, or email him at tmaroney@nc.rr.com.
